Protect Sea Turtles

Save and Protect Sea Turtles!

I think it is very important that our sea turtles are safe because they’re becoming extinct and should be protected by the country. To support my point of views I’m going to share some interesting facts about human interferences and easy things we can do to help the sea turtles survival.

Did you know that sea turtles have outlasted the dinosaurs? So here are some more interesting facts about where and what sea turtles do during their life. Sea turtles grow to the size of a dinner plate and the leather back turtle grows to the size of a dining room table. But each year thousands of sea turtles die getting caught in fishing nets and drowning.

Human interferences have been messing with our precious sea turtles, which is very sad. People are destroying their nesting sites and using their poor little bodies for illegal black markets, their meat is eaten by special people on special occasions and their shells are used to carve combs, jewellery, spears, fishhooks and tools.

Here are some easy solutions we can do to help the sea turtles survival. We can stop our sea turtles dying by picking up rubbish and also keeping up to date the latest news because you’ll know what’s happening to them. Another solution we can do is to keep away from where they nest and feed because we’ll destroy their environment and wreck their life cycle. We can also help people by putting signs up that say, help increase turtle numbers!.

In conclusion I believe that sea turtles should be protected because they’re becoming extinct and should be looked after. So will you stop killing our beautiful reptiles, or will you be one of the caring humans that help look after them.

Kenepuru stream

HEALTHY HARBOURS

Yesterday we went on a trip to learn about the Kenepuru Stream down the old road, One thing I found interesting was that, when the adults are pregnant they swim to Tonga and breed their babies there, then once they have hatched, the babies swim all the way back to New Zealand and the cycle just keeps going.

Things I have Learnt:

  • Banded Kokopu are endangered and rare
  • How yuck and healthy the Kenepuru Stream is
  • You have to put your nets out earlier because some of the animals come out at night, we caught a short fin eel and 5 banded kokopu
  • The clarity of the water was quite clean
  • The temperature was 3.90

microlife

Microlife That Rots Things

-If you leave a fruit lying around it will turn mouldy and start growing pine moulds from the middle outwards.

-Fungus grows through old wood then decomposes into a powder.

-Getting recycled.

-Chemicals called fungicides stop the mould growing.

When fungus grows through wood it decomposes into a powder that forms a chemical called fungicides, fungicides stop the moulds growing from farmers who spray their crops. When dead plants and animals die their leftover pieces get recycled into soil so new plants and animals can eat them.

My woven box

My Woven Box

20151203_112709.jpg

Making my box was really hard because the skills we used were very confusing, especially weaving the papers under and over each other. When I started making my box I had to use skills that I had never used in my whole experience at school, and from there I have learnt how to weave, problem solve and heaps of other stuff.   But sometimes I keeped getting really confused because of the distractions around me and getting mucked up. The hardest part of this was measuring the strips so they could all be the same length. I choose to write about this because I’m really proud of it and I think I did a really good job on my first go.

How to make a woven box

First we had to get a piece of card paper and rule 10 strips of paper that were 3 cm x 45 cm. Next we cut the strips out and started drawing some patterns on them. After that we layed 5 strips vertically and then we laid 5  horizontally, then we started weaving them over and under each other until it formed a checked pattern.  Then after we did that we folded the strips so they could bend up.  Then as soon as we did that we then started on our longer strips.  We grabbed another piece of card paper and ruled 5 strips that were 3 cm x 70 cm.  Next we cut the strips out and started weaving them one by one, around the outside so it started to form a box, and then we sellotaped the ends together.  After that we got our last strip of paper and put it around the rim of the box.
